James Midgley was Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley. He previously served as Dean of the School of Social Welfare and held the Harry and Riva Specht Chair in the Public Social Services (1997-2016). He studied international social development, comparative social policy and welfare and social protection, focusing on the social services and cash transfers in developing countries. James Midgley passed away in June of 2026. He will be missed.
