Berkeley's popular Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) provides an opportunity for Berkeley undergraduates to work with faculty members and research staff on cutting-edge research projects. In Fall 2026, IIS launched a URAP project to engage students in research under IIS's Conflict & Fragility thematic area.
With the generous support of Berkeley Collegium, the IIS URAP engages undergraduate students in research that supports the work of the human rights organization PAEMA (Preventing And Ending Mass Atrocities).
PAEMA's Conflict News Monitoring Program tracks daily conflict and political developments in the three countries where it works: Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Myanmar. The biweekly news is summarized in a concise bulletin disseminated across PAEMA's networks in the US government, the UN Security Council, the offices of UN member states, and various other stakeholders and subscribers. Students participating in the two-unit URAP attend two-hour weekly workshops held in person. They also complete additional research tasks independently and in country-focused teams.
