Pre-Dissertation Research Grant in International Studies

The Pre-Dissertation Research Grant in International Studies supports UC Berkeley graduate students who will not formally advance to candidacy by the Fall of the fellowship term. Grants are intended to support travel, lodging, and research-related expenditures for graduate students who are conducting research away from campus. After completing their projects, grant recipients are required to submit a one-page report and give a brief presentation of their work at the IIS Pre-Dissertation Graduate Student Conference held at the beginning of the Fall semester.

Application Details

Eligible students must submit an application that includes:

  • A description of the proposed research (up to two pages);
  • A CV (up to two pages);
  • A one-page budget plan;
  • A list of all other sources of financial support for the academic year (including summer);
  • An unofficial UC Berkeley transcript;
  • One letter of reference from a faculty member, emailed directly to iis.grants@berkeley.edu (subject line: "Recommendation Letter for [Last Name, First Name], Pre-Dissertation Research Grant"). 

Eligibility

Open to any full-time, registered, UC Berkeley graduate student who will not formally advance to candidacy by the Fall of the fellowship term.

Students from all departments are eligible.

Applicants can receive a maximum of one IIS grant per year.

Award Amount

Up to $5000.

ABD Graduate Students Research Grant In International Studies

All UC Berkeley graduate students in good standing who will formally advance to candidacy (will have satisfied all requirements of the Ph.D. except the dissertation) by the Fall of the fellowship term, may apply. Funds will not be available until the student has advanced to candidacy. Grants are intended to support research on campus or abroad. After completing their projects, grant recipients are required to submit a one-page report and give a brief presentation of their work at the IIS ABD Graduate Student Seminar held at the beginning of the Spring semester.

Eligible students must submit an application that includes:

  • A description of the research project (up to four pages, double-spaced, typeface no smaller than 12-point font);
  • A CV (up to two pages);
  • A budget plan;
  • A list of other sources of financial support;
  • An unofficial UC Berkeley transcript;
  • One letter of support from a faculty member (subject line: "Recommendation Letter for [Last Name, First Name], ABC Graduate Student Research Grant")

Eligibility

Open to any UC Berkeley graduate student in good standing who will formally advance to candidacy (will have satisfied all requirements of the Ph.D. except the dissertation) by the Fall of the fellowship term, may apply. Students must be registered with Graduate Division for their award term. Students are eligible for support regardless of previous fellowships or fellowships from other sources. Student applications need to be compliant with human subject research requirements, if applicable. Requests for tuition and fee costs as separate items will not be considered.

Applicants can receive a maximum of one IIS grant per year.

Award Amount

Up to $15,000.

Grant amounts are at the discretion of the selection committee.
