James John Varellas III
Jay Varellas is a second-year student in Political Science who also holds a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall), and an M.A. in Global Political Economy from the University of Sussex. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, he clerked for a federal judge and worked as a commercial litigator in New York and San Francisco. This summer, he will be a visiting fellow at the City Political Economy Research Center at City University London. His research will focus on the law and political economy of finance, with a particular focus on the utilization and regulation of new financial innovations by public and private organizations in the United Kingdom and the United States. He will also participate in the Transnational Law Summer Institute at King’s College London.
